WHY MATTES?
E.A. Mattes products are made from select, specially developed high quality materials.
The raw skins for Mattes sheepskin products are selected at the place of origin by the
company's own specialists to ensure adherence to its strict standards. Thereafter they
are dressed in the company's own tannery and manufactured into finished goods in its
manufacturing plant.

Why Mattes natural sheepskin...
Mattes is the world's leading sheepskin products company with unsurpassed quality, functional attributes and
appearance. The natural properties of genuine sheepskin can not be imitated by products made of wool pile,
and especially not by artificial fiber products or foam products. There is NO chemical treatment of the wool; this
product is 100% natural. The extreme density of the wool, combined with the upright position of the fibers,
allows air flow between the fibers for excellent circulation, which provides superior padding and ideal pressure
distribution. In addition, the design, which does not have any seams through the wool in the saddle panel area,
eliminates rubbing, friction, chafing, pressure points and heat build-up on the horse's skin. Natural sheepskin
allows no bounce, but provides extremely high sweat absorption, as its fibers are capable of absorbing eight
times their own weight in moisture before it even begins to feel wet.
Other functional materials and general design...
Mattes pads are designed to be form fitting, and to endure the rigors of both riding and cleaning. You'll notice
that the top line on all Mattes pads incorporate a high wither with an anatomically correct curvature. This
design eliminates pinching or rubbing in the gullet area of the saddle, which can often be a result of the
"straight" top lines found on other pads. You'll also notice the pommel area on every pad is overlapped with
sheepskin. All Mattes pads are designed this way to ensure the pad stays in place and does not shift or slide. In
addition, for the Correction System, the heavy-duty outer cotton quilt, with the patented Mattes stitching pattern,
has been combined with an inner core made from no bounce PolyFlex, which has visco-elastic properties. A
material that will not rot, get lumpy or lose its firmness, even after numerous washings, Poly-Flex still allows
full airflow, unlike foam rubber. Combined with the hand picked natural sheepskin, Mattes offers a saddle pad
that's functional and practical with easy care. All fasteners are Velcro and easy-to-handle.
Light Flannel...
E.A. Mattes uses this Light Flannel Pad as an ideal addition to the PM System Half Pad. It is made from extra
strength cotton flannel, preshrunk and double layered. Used in conjunction with the PM System Half Pad, it will
protect the sheepskin with minimal reduction in its properties. The material washes easily, and if necessary,
may be washed daily. The maximum shrinkage is 5% if correctly treated.
Cactus-knitted...
For the grooming mitts, Mattes uses only knitted cactus. The characteristic of the knitted variety is the loop
structure. The loops rise up and create a much rougher surface than the woven cloth variety. This way the
cleaning is much more effective.
Special washing liquid -MELP...
The Mattes liquid MELP is biodegradable. It is a highly concentrated mix of washing agents and fat liquors used
in the manufacture of Mattes skins. MELP has regreasing properties, thus restoring the elasticity and other
natural properties of the wool, the leather, and also the textile materials used in the products. It is also ideal for
washing washable leather goods. It is imperative to follow washing instructions. Most Mattes products are
machine washable.
